BLOG, BLOG, BLOG...What is Marketing? And How do I get Some.
I use the word marketing and I'm sure it means something different to everyone who hears it. It's like the color green. Try describing it to someone. Imagine that you have a drawer in your kitchen and it's filled with tools. Most of us have a drawer like this and it's got a screwdriver, a wrench, some scissors, an old piece of wire, a few nails, a couple of old washers, maybe a hammer or roll of duct tape. Most of the time you pick the appropriate tool for the job. The hammer for the loose nail, the screw driver to tighten up your bike seat. But sometimes we get lazy, we fix the hanging curtain rod with the end of the wrench, we duct tape the hole in the screen door. It's ugly and we know it. With marketing, you have that same drawer with lots of tools and common sense guides us to use them appropriately. So let's say you have an upcoming event and you've waited a bit too long to get ads in the magazines and you just don't have the time or money to mail a post card and you're just too short staffed to get people on the phones. You look to email as a solution. Now I never recommend stop gap measures for marketing. Great results require great planning and even better implementation, but hey, things happen. A word of caution, use email blasts sparingly. It's so easy to overload your mailing list and piss people off. I'd say that once a month is plenty. But when you're in a pinch...send a pleasant, short and upbeat message reminding your list that the event is coming up fast. Write it as if you're receiving the message. Include items you'd want to know about that are fun and inviting. Yes, you'll need to include time, place, sponsors names, etc. but put the benefits up front...in the first line...to help draw attention to the event. It's never easy to be disciplined about marketing, but it really pays off if you can write a detailed plan, include a calendar with action steps and be diligent about follow through.
